Recent Aluminium Sector Product Developments from ExtrudaSeal

As demand in the aluminium fabrication industry continues to rise, this has provided ExtrudaSeal with the opportunity to develop a wide range of new products, staying up to date with technological developments and addressing fabricator demands. As specialists in the design, development, manufacture and supply of thermoplastic extrusions, in recent times, we have proudly developed a number of new aluminium glazing seal and gasket products with improved performance.

‘Fit-And-Forget’ Aluminium Bi-Folding Door Threshold Gaskets

Threshold Gasket

In response to installer and fabricator demand, our in-house design team crafted this threshold gasket for use with a wide range of leading aluminium systems, including ALUK.

The fit and forget provides a fully secure fix, improved compression and weather sealing thanks to a unique semi-rigid box foot. The semi-rigid PVC foot is a great advancement over traditional systems as an alternative in fabrication, that can be retrofitted to prevent call backs.

Aeroseal Aluminium Bi-Fold Door Foam Gasket

With the help of a rigid foot, the Aeroseal aluminium bi-fold door foam gasket cannot be over-stretched or shrunk. The intelligent foam technology comes with improved acoustic installation, impressive weather sealing ability and more memory.

The consistent colour throughout stops damage from showing, without needing a protective skin like competitor products.

Sealfast U-Channel Gasket

SealFast is designed to seal steel windows, doors and other applications without gasket grooves. It also includes a robust adhesive strip, allowing it to be used directly on a glazing bead.

The U-Channel gasket improves the performance by providing a higher resistance to air permeability, wind load and any drafts preventing them from going beneath the glazed IGU.

ExtrudaSeal and The Folding Sliding Door Company

The Folding Sliding Door Company was founded by owner Paul Shearman, whose apprenticeship as a joiner and engineer in the German door industry was important in defining the future philosophy of his business.

The company developed its first doors in timber before manufacturing the UK’s first PVC-U in-line bi-folding door in 2003 with an innovative design with no face-fixed hardware and a concealed running gear.

“It sounds so mainstream now but we were the first bi-fold manufacturer to develop a PVC-U system with concealed running gear”, says their Managing Director, Kehinde Jolaoso.

Soon after, the company designed, developed and branded a Fold ‘N’ Slide Hardware offering, a dedicated universal hardware system that was compatible with all materials. The Part Q accredited system features easily adjustable rollers, security hardware and flush threshold options.

Hugely versatile, Fold ‘N’ Slide hardware is suitable for use across all leading PVC-U and aluminium systems plus timber and timber/aluminium and aluminium/PVC-U composites.

A focus on detail has driven ExtrudaSeal’s partnership with The Folding Sliding Door Company. As a specialist manufacturer, we have extruded more than 20,000 km of gaskets in the last year, tapping into economies of scale to offer customers average savings of 30-40% on gasket costs compared to buying-in from systems companies.

“Price is an important part of it but we don’t buy from ExtrudaSeal just because of price – it’s about service, support and relationships”, says Kehinde.

We use ExtrudaSeal push-in and wedge gaskets across our systems. They’re also universal. Plus weatherseals on panels.

“Where we have really seen value is in their R&D process. They have their own teams in-house, who we’ve worked with to develop and refine solutions and they have always been very responsive.”

The Extrudaseal gasket range is available in more than 1000 RAL colours including RAL 9007 metallic silver gasket, which has been designed to provide a match to contemporary silver powder coated installations for The Folding Sliding Door Company.

“What you get with ExtrudaSeal is that same focus that we have brought to bi-fold door manufacture, and in our experience that leads to products which are more technologically advanced.”

3 Important Benefits of Using Co-Extruded Seals for Windows and Doors

It goes without saying that door and window seals need to be strong and durable, but also flexible. They need to be able withstand moisture and severe weather, helping to seal off the interior, however, they must also be flexible enough to be easily installed and designed to last for a long time. Flexible compounds such as TPE, PVC, PVC nitriles and TPU make ideal extrusion materials due to their flexibility and weather resistance qualities, however, by combining more than one material, an even stronger seal can be created. This is called co-extrusion.

Co-extrusion follows the same principles as single material extrusion process, however, a combination of thermoplastic materials are melted together before being driven through die to form a continuous profile with the combined strengths of each material. Here we discuss three of the most important benefits of using co-extruded seals for windows and doors.

Excellent Weather Sealing Performance

As stated, by co-extruding window seals, the best properties of each material combine to provide an improved weather sealing solution. By dialling in certain amounts of each material, you can design a seal to best suit the conditions that it will face – co-extruded plastic seals can have fantastic weatherability and flexibility, as well as providing good protection for the window panes. Minimal shrinkage is also an important property – co-extruded seals can be designed so that there is no shrinkage when in contact with hot or cold temperatures.

Co-extrusion is very cost effective

Compared with other manufacturing processes, extrusion and co-extrusion are much more cost effective. Whilst the correct dies must be manufactured, the production of extruded and co-extruded parts takes less time than other processes and requires only a minimum level of labour – as a result, costs are kept down.

Co-extrusion provides great quality performance and production efficiency

The co-extrusion production process is simple and with the right tooling, it is easy to produce window seals that exceed quality expectations. Co-extrusion is money well spent; quality window seals will not only provide excellent performance, but will last for a number of years when co-extrusion materials are carefully considered.

As specialists in flexible extrusions, our team and plant are second to none when it comes to producing and advising on co-extruded window and door seals. If you are in need of more information, please call +44 (0)121 356 9733 or email

How Aluminium Fabricators Can Save Money and Access the Best Quality Products

Threshold Gasket

When it comes to buying in gaskets, purchasing them from your systems company can be an expensive way to do business. Why, we hear you ask? Well, because systems companies do not manufacture gaskets themselves, they’re not privy to the exclusive discounts on materials that a specialist plastic extrusion company is.

What’s more, their supplier will have undoubtedly put a mark-up on the materials, which will then be marked up again before being passed on to you. It sounds like an expensive carry on, doesn’t it? It is, and can cost you a whopping 40 per cent more compared to if you buy from a company like us here at Extrudaseal.

With the aluminium sector forecast to grow like never before, thinking smart and buying wisely can help you generate fantastic profits. But if you’re not careful, they can inadvertently spend thousands of pounds that could have lined your pockets.

Still need convincing?

We manufacture phenomenal volumes of extrusions in-house, involve no middlemen and don’t stick a mark-up on our products. Furthermore, in contrast to most systems companies, we manufacture and supply gaskets in more than 1,000 RAL colours, including metallic.

Whether you’re in the glazing industry and need replacement seals and gaskets, or are looking for a range compatible with market leading profile systems like Aluk, MetalTech and Smarts, we have over 600 designs of seal in our range which are suitable for aluminium, timber and uPVC glazing frames and bi-fold doors.

Winter – When Gaskets Most Commonly Fail

With winter on the horizon, installers will know that it’s the time of year when window seals and gaskets need replacing. Whether it’s due to crackling and crumbling, because they’ve become unstuck from their frame, or they’re started letting in wind and damp, the colder months are often when problems are highlighted.

weather seals

Replacing a gasket can help to insulate a property and prevent damp air from getting into a window frame, and if you’re a professional – you’ll know that this isn’t a particularly difficult job. But picking the right product for the system you are working with can be a tricky task that sometimes needs expert guidance. Ensuring you have the right gasket for the application means it should stand the test of time and reduce call backs to a bare minimum.

That’s where our team at Extrudaseal come in – helping you pick the right seal or gasket for the job, every time. We’re one of the leading suppliers of replacement seals and gaskets for the glazing industry, and have over 600 designs of seal in our range which are suitable for aluminium, timber and uPVC glazing frames and bi-fold doors. Our range is also compatible with most market leading profile systems, such as Aluk, MetalTech, Senior Aluminium and Smarts – essential in today’s market. Our team will try their best to find an exact replacement seal, and if we can’t find an exact match, we’ll find you a suitable, potentially better alternative.

We offer a huge range of weatherproof gaskets and seals, that work just as effectively in summer or winter. Materials available include TPE, along with PVC Nitrile in a range of hardness, suitable for both single and co-extrusion.

New Product Announcement – SealFast U-Channel Gasket

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve expanded our SealFast range with the addition of a new U-channel gasket, that can be used to enhance wind load resistance in windows when used as part of a glazing system.

SealFast has been developed to provide a seal on steel windows and doors or other applications without gasket grooves, and features a robust adhesive strip that means it can be directly applied to a glazing bead.

The U-channel gasket enhances performance by providing increased resistance to wind load, air permeability and drafts by stopping them from passing underneath the glazed IGU.

‘Wind load’ is a term used to refer to all the pressures or forces that the wind applies on a building or structure.  Resistance to wind load is assessed under BS EN 12210. Performance for maximum test pressure is grouped into five classes, with class one the lowest performance and class five being the best.

At Extrudaseal, we’ve produced more than 10,000km of gaskets in the past year alone, along with a wide range of weather seals, Glazepta tapes, U-channels, pressure plates, box sections and bi-folding door seals for leading systems.

Reducing the Number of Call Backs with Quality Bi-fold Door Gaskets

Every installer knows that bad quality equipment can impact their reputation and increase the number of call backs they receive. That’s why many of them are now on the lookout for top quality products that don’t fail and leave them in hot water.

One of the key products taking the market by storm are our fit and forget bi-fold door gaskets, which was designed by our in-house team after listening to the frustrations faced by installers up and down the country.

Launched at the end of 2016, it can be retrofitted and bypass many of the problems associated with usual types of gasket, such as misalignment and ‘kicking out.’ It is also suitable for use with many leading aluminium systems, including ALUK, and provides a secure fix, improves compression and offers better weather sealing.

Thanks to their countless advantages, it’s easy to see why installers are now opting for our bi-fold door gaskets over less reliable options. Paul James, our Sales Director, said: ‘We saw an immediate jump in enquiries for aluminium bi-fold threshold gaskets following June’s heatwave. It’s clearly a time when people want to open-up their doors and make the most of outdoor and indoor spaces.

‘Equally, it’s the time when gaskets can fail, either because they have been caught in opening and closing and are damaged, haven’t been fitted properly or have stuck because of a build of friction on the seal.

‘That means call backs and costs. It’s a source of frustration for so many installers, which is why we developed our solution.

‘Friction on bi-fold gasket seals is a known problem. Even where doors are fitted correctly, a lack of proper maintenance by the homeowner can lead to the build- up, which can lift the gasket out of the threshold or alignment on opening.

‘Silicone lubricant sprays will reduce static build-up. The problem is that in some systems it doesn’t take much to lift the threshold gasket out of position and then it can easily catch as the door rollers pass alongside, the sash passes over or on shoot-bolts.

‘As well as providing improved sealing and compression, the major advantage of our gasket, is the semi-rigid box foot. This provides additional resistance so that even if you get a build-up of static, it doesn’t kick out of place.

‘Customers can also save an average of 30 to 40 per cent, on gaskets by buying product in from ExtrudaSeal, as a third party, compared to buying it from their systems company.

‘Call backs cost installers money. Not just the replacement part but time on site and travel time. This can equate to thousands a year. If you’re a fabricator, it also doesn’t do you any favours with your customers.

‘You shouldn’t be getting call backs on gaskets unless doors haven’t been fitted properly or they have been abused, yet we have spoken to installers who have gone back repeatedly to the same job. The development of our semi-rigid box foot ends this cycle on a wide range of aluminium systems.

Now extruding more than 10,000 km of gaskets in the last year, alongside weather seals, Glazepta tapes and U-channels, pressure plates, box sections and bi-folding door seals for leading systems, plus an extensive ‘back catalogue’ of extrusions, ExtrudaSeal serves fabricators and installers nationwide.

ExtrudaSeal at the FIT Show 2017 – What Stood Out

When we exhibited at the FIT Show in May, one of the things that really stood out was the sheer number of manufacturers looking to reduce their spend without skimping on product quality.

But with manufacturing costs on the rise and customer expectations at a record high, is meeting this demand possible?

Yes, it is

When buying in from a specialist extruder, manufacturers and installers can cut out the middle-man, reduce costs and access better quality products. At Extrudaseal, our gaskets are around 30 to 40% cheaper than other systems companies, which can really add up.

The rise of aluminium

With aluminium doors and windows becoming increasingly popular, the gasket market is thriving. This means that companies like us are producing high volumes, which allows us to reduce the cost of manufacturing before passing on these benefits to the end user.

Keeping ahead of the game with new product development

The new AeroSeal aluminium bi-fold door foam gasket

With a range of gasket manufacturers to choose from, price isn’t the only thing that can give a competitive edge. It’s also about responding to market demand and devising a range of products that come with a range of functions and a variety of colours.

To illustrate the increasing popularity of grey and coloured gaskets, only 16% of gaskets sold in 2015 were grey or coloured, while in 2016 that rose to a quarter. The remainder of those sold were either black or white.

Acknowledging this increase in demand for new and coloured gaskets, our expertly developed range is available in more than 1000 RAL colours. We have also extracted over 20,000km of gaskets in a variety of forms and even launched a new gasket in a high gloss Piano Black finish.

Reacting to the industry trend for aluminium bi-fold doors, we’ve developed AeroSeal, a pioneering, through-colour, aluminium bi-fold door foam gasket that offers the ability to co-extrude with a rigid foot, making it resistant to over-stretching and shrinking.

Our Sales Director, Paul James, said:

‘What we saw at the FIT Show were people looking to reduce overheads but also improved product quality. The market’s growing but it’s also extremely competitive. It’s going to be increasingly important to offer products with USPs.

‘Even the smallest of additional selling points is going to be important in tipping the balance in your favour. Whether that’s more reliable gasket compression, weather sealing or colour finish it’s all about edging ahead.’

Keeping Prices Low for our Customers

In an unstable and unpredictable economy, finding new ways of offsetting the extra cost of materials can be a challenge that manufacturers across the country are having to face.

Rising costs of imported raw materials combined with currency weakness means that the industry is having to manage cost pressures that have not always been so tough. Unfortunately, these costs are inevitably passed down from fabricators to installers, and in theory, from installers to consumers.

At ExtrudaSeal, we are always looking for ways to absorb any extra costs in order to avoid price increases for our customers. We do this by constantly evolving to ensure that we are running efficiently and cost effectively.

We are finding that our aluminium seals are becoming more and more popular, thanks to the emergence of aluminium bi-fold doors and windows. Though this might pose a challenge to some manufacturers due to the increased expenses, we see it as a huge field of opportunity and so are willing to absorb extra costs where possible.

To put it into perspective, Figures released by Palmer Market Research show that aluminium is set to reach a 17 year high of topping 220,000 frames within the next three years – exciting stuff if you’re in the business.

During the last year, we have extracted over 20,000km of gaskets in a variety of forms – and even launched a new gasket in a high gloss Piano Black finish.

Chris Byers, our Managing Director, said:

“Whilst we have recently had to increase prices slightly, for 5 years previous, we managed to hold prices despite the increases that we have seen in our own material costs. We achieved this by investing in new efficiencies and processes and we will continue to do our very best to absorb without passing it onto our customers in the future.

“Our customers can save money by buying in from us as a third party. Over the course of a year and with sufficient volume, the savings can fundamentally increase a fabricator’s bottom line.”

If you would like to find out how ExtrudaSeal could help your business shave off its costs, please call 0121 356 8733, or visit us at stand M55 at the FIT Show from 23-25th May.
